What camera should I buy?
This is a question I get all the time, and in all honesty, I think about this question for myself too.
I mean, even as we speak, Sony just released two new cameras today. A7Sii and the FS5. Cameras are coming out left and right, so fast that as a beginner it may be confusing on what camera to get.
I explain in this video to not think about the gear so much, but instead ask yourself,
“What story am I trying to tell?” “Do I really need 240fps?” “What style of shooter am I?”
“Documentaries or studio work?”
When I decided to jump into a dslr, It took me weeks to finally pull the trigger. Buy this, buy that, Sony, Panasonic, Nikon, Canon, so many choices.
That being said, I wanted to mention and share some links to easy camera set ups for beginners. Figure out what camera works for the type of storytelling you do.
It took myself quite a while to figure out what type of style and cameras I liked. With that said, I have been able to shoot with many different cameras, from many different manufactures. I’ve learned that I am a color guy and tend to gravitate to cameras that produce amazing color. I also love easy menus and simple ergonomics.
So, don’t just jump on the band wagon and buy a brand because it is new, or because your friend shoots with it. Ask yourself those hard questions, “What style of shooter am I?”, “Do I really need this feature for the price?”, and “Will this fit the story.”
Hopefully this helps you out. I wish I would have tried cameras out before buying, it would have saved me some headaches.
